Volleyball – a crash course in how to play the game

Volleyball is a sport played in teams of six. In competition, teams are segregated by gender, although there are many collegiate mixed teams.

The goal of volleyball is to get points by putting the ball on the other side of the court for what is called a kill. Teams can also earn points when errors occur. The most common foul is when an opponent’s ball lands out of bounds. Other faults are catching the ball, a player touching the ball twice in a row, or four team players touching the ball without successfully crossing the net.

A coin toss is used to determine who controls the ball. This team sends the ball over the net. From there, teams hit the ball back and forth across the net until someone gets a point. The ball is often passed to a teammate to make an attack on the other team. A rally occurs when they are able to return the ball. The march continues until he commits a murder or a mistake. The team that gets the point also gets the ball to serve, at which point they rotate the players clockwise.

Volleyball game consists of 5 groups. Generally, sets are played up to 25 points with a two-point lead requirement. Best out of 5 wins the match.

The volleyball courts measure 59 by 29.5 feet, divided by a net 7’11” high above the court for men and 7’4″ higher for women’s competitions. (The young ones’ nets are shorter).
